B Movies Themes: Robot Monster (1953)

Phil Tucker avait 25 ans quand il a réalisé ce somptueux nanard en 4 jours de tournage. Budget: 16.000 dollars, pas beaucoup pour un film tourné en 3D (avec une équipe qui n'avait jamais utilisé ce genre de matériel). Malgré son niveau assez médiocre, le film engrangea 1 million de dollars lors de sa sortie en salles....
Connu comme un des plus mauvais films de SF (avec l'illustre "Plan 9 From Outer Space" d'Ed Wood), Robot Monster est passé à la postérité pour son alien particulièrement ridicule, surnommé Ro-Man. Comme le budget ne permettait pas la réalisation d'un costume de robot comme prévu initialement, Phil Tucker engagea son ami George Barrows, qui possédait son propre costume de gorille. Tucker eut l'idée d'y ajouter un casque de cosmonaute, et Ro-man était né...

La grande surprise, c'est de voir au générique le nom d'Elmer Bernstein, le compositeur de "The Man with the Golden Arm", "The Ten Commandments", "The Magnificent Seven", "The Great Escape", "True Grit", "Ghost Busters", "An American Werewolf in London" entre autres.
Il faut croire que Bernstein avait une affection particulière pour la SF de série B, puisqu'il écrivit la même année la musique de "Cat-Women of the Moon".

Phil Tucker was 25 when he directed this wonderful piece of turkey, shot in a mere 4 days on a budget of 16.000 dollars - not a lot for a 3D movie (especially if you consider that the crew never had worked with the special equipment before). Despite being mediocre, the movie grossed 1 million dollars in its initial theatrical release.

It shares with Ed Wood's "Plan 9 From Outer Space" the dubious honor of being the worst SF movie ever, in great part thanks to its ridiculous alien creature, Ro-Man. The tight budget didn't allow for the construction of a robot costume, as Tucker had planned, so he hired his friend George Barrows, who was smart enough to own a gorilla suit. Tucker had the idea of replacing he ape head with a space suit helmet, and thus Ro-man was born...

My great surprise was to see the name of Elmer Bernstein in the credits; Bernstein is a major Hollywood film composer, having written the scores for "The Man with the Golden Arm", "The Ten Commandments", "The Magnificent Seven", "The Great Escape", "True Grit", "Ghost Busters", "An American Werewolf in London" among others.

It seems that Bernstein had a real fondness for science fiction B movies: the same year, he also wrote the music for "Cat-Women of the Moon".
