B Movie Themes: The Thing From Another World (1951)

Réalisé en 1951 par Howard Hawks et Christian Nyby, "The Thing From Another World" est un des classiques de la SF vintage que je préfère. Je suis toujours frappé par la modernité du jeu des acteurs, servis par des dialogues affutés pour l'époque (on est plus proche de l'esprit caustique du Film Noir que des dialogues souvent balourds de la SF des années 50).
Le remake de 1982 de John Carpenter est paraît-il plus fidèle au roman dont The Thing est tiré, mais j'ai un faible pour cette version épurée, urbaine, jazzy, finalement assez proche du Alien de Ridley Scott.

J'avais été étonné de trouver Elmer Bernstein derrière la musique de Robot Monster, je le suis tout autant de trouver le nom de
Dimitri Tiomkin associé à ce projet; Tiomkin, c'est "It's a Wonderful Life", "Strangers on a Train", "Duel in the Sun", "High Noon", "Giant", "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral" , "Rio Bravo" et "The Guns of Navarone" - pas un manchot, Dimitri....
Pour la télé , il a composé pour "Rawhide" et "The Wild Wild West".

En toute franchise, le générique de The Thing est loin d'être ce qu'il a fait de mieux: c'est vraiment l'archétype du thème lourd et menaçant de l'époque, gorgé de cuivres et de timbales.

Directed in 1951 by Howard Hawks and/or Christian Nyby, "The Thing From Another World" is one of my favorite vintage SF movies. I am always impressed by the modernity of the actors' playing, greatly helped by sharp dialogues, certainly considering the period when the film was shot (the general mood is certainly closer to Film Noir than the usually clumsy lines and wooden acting so typical of fifties SF films).
The 1982 John Carpenter remake is said to be closer to the original novel, but I definitely have a weak spot for this barebones, urban, jazzy version, that reminds me a lot of Ridley Scott's Alien.

If I was surprised to see Elmer Bernstein associated with the score of Robot Monster, I am even more impressed to discover that the score of The Thing etc.. was written by Dimitri Tiomkin; Tiomkin is certainly no Hollywood hack: "It's a Wonderful Life", "Strangers on a Train", "Duel in the Sun", "High Noon", "Giant", "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral" , "Rio Bravo" and "The Guns of Navarone" .... and also a few TV themes ("Rawhide" & "The Wild Wild West"), the man had some serious chops.

Not so much for this one, though... the opening theme for The Thing etc.. is quite the usual affair, all menacing brass and pounding timpanis.
